Old Town is a district in Santo Ileso.
Description[]
"The origins of Old Town date back to the 18th century and the founding of El Presidio de Santo Ileso, built to defend a strategic position on the Rio Salinas. In 1821, control of the fort passed from Spain to Mexico. During the Spanish-American War, the 4th Missouri Mounted Volunteers under Colonel Joseph Fawkes Cullen briefly held the fort in 1846. In 1854, the United States purchased Kavanagh County from Mexico, and settlers from the north and east soon arrived in large numbers.
In 1884, the settlement outside the walls of the presidio (renamed Fort Cullen after the purchase) incorporated officially as the City of Santo Ileso. People referred to this area as ""Santo Ileso"" proper until the 1920s, when the newly developed Lakeshore financial district emerged as an economic powerhouse. Around this time, this area became known (somewhat derisively) as ""Old Town.""
Today the district is best known for its historical attractions. With few notable exceptions, the architecture of the Old Town has not changed much since the early 20th century though its buildings are continually repurposed as businesses and residents come and go.
Here you can find Fort Cullen – a popular tourist attraction, City Hall, Kavanagh County Fairgrounds – currently occupied by the Idols as well as a deconsecrated Church currently awaiting demolition by developers."[1]
