Missions are essentially Level (video gaming) that allow progress through the storyline of Saints Row.
The 3rd Street Saints are a gang in Stilwater created by Julius Little for the purpose of cleaning out the city's existing gangs, so as to stop the endless inter-gang violence and bring peace to the streets. Julius leads the Saints, both from the front and through his lieutenants: Johnny Gat, Dexter "Dex" Jackson, Troy Bradshaw, Lin, and eventually The Protagonist.

Strongholds, or "Stronghold Missions", are non-storyline missions which unlock additional neighborhoods. Strongholds silently become available after some missions, must be completed in order to unlock the final mission of each arc, and have a separate map filter.

The Los Carnales (though Dex will insist on calling them The Carnales or Los Carnales) were Stilwater's first gang, with a thirty-year history and ties to Colombian drug merchants. Since their inception the Carnales have been run by the Lopez family; the current leaders are Hector and Angelo, who rule by fear through their legendary enforcer, Victor Rodriguez. Other figures of note are Luz Avalos, Angelo's girlfriend, and Manuel Orejuela, the Carnales' connection with the Colombian Drug Cartel.

The Westside Rollerz are a collection of speed freaks and street racers from Stilwater's residential districts; nominally, they would be little threat to the highly organized Carnales and Vice Kings, but some unseen force is organizing this rabble into a serious menace. Their leader is Joseph Price, nephew to attorney William Sharp; other important figures include Donny, a skilled car mechanic, and Lin, an up-and-coming member with a yen for street racing.

The Vice Kings are a well-entrenched gang with heavy ties to legitimate business and a deep relationship with the SCPD. They are held together almost single-handed by the will and might of one man: Benjamin King, who has been in the "business" longer than almost anyone alive in Stilwater today. Among King's lieutenants are Warren "E-Z Money" Williams, who runs Kingdom Come Records, the label of superstar singer Aisha; Anthony Green, King's personal enforcer, and Tanya Winters, a new figure who gained importance largely by sleeping with anyone important she could get to (mostly Green and Williams, nowadays).

Missions provide the narrative of Saints Row.

For missions in other games in the Saints Row series, see Missions.

Overview

Missions are essentially levels that allow progress through the storyline of Saints Row.

Strongholds, or "Stronghold Missions", are non-storyline missions which unlock additional neighborhoods. Strongholds silently become available after some missions, must be completed in order to unlock the final mission of each arc, and have a separate map filter.

After completing three missions and a Stronghold in the prologue (which all serve as a tutorial), the game's missions become separated over three different story arcs which concentrate on the 3rd Street Saints' efforts on conquering the other three gangs that own Stilwater: the Westside Rollerz, Los Carnales, and the Vice Kings.

Respect is a form of currency that is used to start missions, and can be accumulated by playing Activities; which also unlock cash and other bonuses upon completion. Overall, there are 36 missions in Saints Row.
