Mercado is a district in Santo Ileso.

Description[]

"The origins of Mercado date back to the late 1850s when the Chalmers-Dobson Overland Mail Company established its Missouri-California Mail Line, a 3,000-mile route from Saint Louis to San Francisco. Farmers, artisans, traders, and merchants from Mexico traveled north to meet the line where it crossed the Rio Salinas, just south of El Presidio de Santo Ileso.

Over the decades, the small, seasonal trading post grew into a thriving year-round marketplace, and the arrival of the railroad in 1881 only accelerated its expansion. If Rancho Providencia was where people lived, and Smelterville was where they worked, Mercado was where they spent their money. By the mid-1880s, all three areas had been annexed by the newly incorporated City of Santo Ileso.

Though Mercado prospered in the early 20th century, the area was hit hard by the Great Depression. It enjoyed a resurgence during the post-war boom, but by then, most of the new economic development was happening across the lake, in El Dorado, Marina del Lago, and the glittering financial empire of Lakeshore.

In recent years, Mercado has become once again a haven for entrepreneurs. The relatively low rents and access to infrastructure have made it a popular location for new businesses to get their start. Here you can find open air markets and shops where all sorts of fun items can be purchased. When Eli was looking for an apartment to rent, he came to Mercado, and soon found 3 roommates to share the space with--Neenah, Kev, and the Boss."[1]
