There are many hidden "Easter Eggs" in the Saints Row series.

Overview[]

Easter Eggs are secrets hidden in video games and films which are not related to the plot and reference something from outside the story.

This page is not a repository of all Trivia. There are many movie, literary, and popular culture references throughout the game, such as quotes, and the names of Missions and Achievements. These are listed in the Trivia section of each article.

See the pages for game credits for a list of in-game references to developers.

31 Theory[]

During Kinzie's Homie conversation with Josh in Saints Row: The Third, she mentions her "31 Theory".

The 31 Theory. Anything important is always connected to a 31. Nyte Blayde Season 3; best season, aired in January, had thirteen episodes.
— Kinzie, in a Homie conversation with Josh[1]

Many works of fiction often contain multiple references to the same number, usually the favorite number of the writer. TVtropes refers to this concept as an Arc Number.

Here are some other in-game references to 31 and 13, some obviously deliberate, some possibly coincidental.

Saints Row[]

  • Tanya's code to the King Penthouse is 3131.[2]
  • There are 31 discrete items in the Funky Fresh Pack, although this is likely to be a coincidence, as it was advertised as having 69 items, due to the different wear options.[3]
  • There are 31 Single Player Achievements in Saints Row.[4]
  • The TrueSkill Rank for Kingpin is 31 Wins.[5]
  • There are "Spikey"-branded shoeboxes in places like the King Penthouse which all have a shoe size of 13 on the box.

Saints Row 2[]

  • Vinnie, the contact in the Hotel and Marina Crowd Control cutscene mentions "Bukkake High School 31".[6]
  • "Assault on Precinct 31" - originally assumed to be purely a reference to the film Assault on Precinct 13.
  • Gat says he was in jail for "Two years and 31 days".[7]
  • The description for the Hitman target Tim says that he is a fireman who thinks he's seen an arsonist light 31 different buildings on fire.[8]
  • There are 31 Compliments and Taunts available as Gang Customization options.
  • Stilwater Savings & Loan has 13 stories.[Reference needed]
  • News 13 Stilwater is one of the stations in The Anna Show cutscene.[9]
  • Pierce wears a Stilwater Sharks Short Sleeve Baseball Jersey with a Number 13 Logo.[10]
  • There are a maximum of 31 badges in Multiplayer.[Reference needed]
  • During the Rusty's Needle commercials with Matt, the announcer says "Reason to shop at Rusty's Needle #31: the Feed Dogs".[11]

Red Faction[]

The Saints Row series features many references to Red Faction, but Volition have confirmed multiple times that the Saints Row and Red Faction universes are not linked, and that the Ultor references were only intended as Easter Eggs and an homage.[46][47][48][49]

Ultor The Ultor corporation in Saints Row was a peripheral company who sponsored the Ultor Dome and had some Clothing items. In Saints Row 2, Ultor is a main antagonist. Ultor continues making appearances throughout the series.
Mars In Ultor Exposed, when Playa asks Tera where Ultor plans on mining, she responds by saying: "You wouldn't believe me if I told you". In Corporate Warfare, Playa tells Eric Gryphon: "Ultor can go to Mars for all I care".
Masako The head of the Mercenaries in Red Faction is called Masako, the name of the protection team of Ultor in Saints Row 2.
Vogel In Red Faction, a mountain in Mars' ice area is called Mount Vogel, a reference to Dane Vogel.
Gryphon In Red Faction, there's an Ultor administrator named Richard Gryphon. In Saints Row 2: Corporate Warfare and Saints Row: The Third, there is an Ultor administrator named Eric Gryphon.
Parker
  • Parker is the name of the main character from Red Faction.
  • In Saints Row 2, there's a radio advertisement for a TV show called Red Planet, Red Passion, a drama series about miners on Mars. It mentions a character named Parker, and a character named Eos, another character from Red Faction.
  • In Saints Row 2, while inside the pyramid facility, there is a PA announcement that says "Parker please report to the mining facility." Red Faction takes place in a mine on Mars
Miners In Saints Row 2: Ultor Exposed, Tera mentions research to improve Miners working conditions, miners made up the original Red Faction.
EDF Scout In Saints Row 2: Ultor Exposed, there is a vehicle named the EDF Scout, which are used to scout out hazardous mining areas. When Playa asks where such equipment would be needed, Tera says that he wouldn't believe it if she told him. The EDF are the antagonists of the then recent Red Faction: Guerilla. The vehicle is almost identical to the vehicle in that game, except for a different turret.
EDF Flyer On the very top floor of the Stilwater Science Center, there is a model of an EDF Flyer from Red Faction: Guerrilla. These also appear in the mission "Gangstas in Space", the Tails of the Flyers have EDF markings.
Logo
  • The symbol of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction appear as logos that can be applied to clothing.
  • Read Fiction Used Books - a store in Sommerset whose sign is similar to the Red Faction title and logo.[50][51][52][53][54]
  • RFS - Radio Free Stilwater, an unused Radio Station whose logo is similar to Red Faction's logo.
  • In "The Fight Before Christmas", the Elf Resistance uses a symbol consisting of a green fist clenched over a candy cane which resembles the Red Faction: Guerilla logo.[55][54]
Gangstas in Space Speech In the final cutscene of the mission "Gangstas in Space", Playa gives a speech the same as the speech given by Alec Mason, the protagonist of Red Faction: Guerrilla, in the final cutscene of that game. Reinforced by how Male 1's voice actor is Troy Baker, the same person who voices Alec Mason in Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Saints Row[]

Suicides[]

There are many Civilian suicide locations in Saints Row.[57][58]

Suiciding Civilians stand at the cliff edge until approached by Playa, then they say a random line and jump.

I can't take writing all these persona lines
— Black male civilian before committing suicide

Judges, get your score-cards ready!
— Asian female before committing suicide

Teddy bear[]

Inside the Lopez Mansion is a locked room containing a Teddy bear full of money. The door can be opened by an explosion, and the bear breaks open when shot, but is invulnerable to explosions.[59]

K6 Krukov spawn[]

A K6 Krukov spawns every 15 seconds on a basketball field north-east of the Abandoned Police Station.[60]

Misc[]

There are multiple buildings named "Chuk Niuk's Books", referring to Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club.[61]

Secret Stash[]

This easter egg causes Playa to be permanently on fire with super-human strength.[62][63]

  1. Equip a Pimp Cane which has been acquired using the #pimpcane cheat.
  2. After midnight, begin Theft in the Sloppy Seconds in the Saint's Row district.
  3. Enter the safe code backwards without letting the joystick return to the center.
  4. Exit Safecracking by pressing down on the DPAD twice.
  5. Exit the store through any door and an unlock screen is displayed.[64]

Notes:

  • Safecracking is not available before Back To Basics.
  • The store can be entered at any time, including when the store is still open.
  • It does not matter which door is used to enter or exit the Store.
  • The Pimp Cane cannot have been unlocked normally via Snatch, and must be acquired using the cheat.
  • The Pimp Cane cheat does not have to be entered during the current play session, so long as it was originally acquired using the cheat.
  • If the backwards safe code is not successfully entered the first time, it is possible to retry safecracking.
  • Repeatedly triggering the easter egg without resetting the console results in 1 character being removed from the end of the unlock screen text each time it is displayed.[65]
  • Other unlock screens may be glitched afterwards.[66]
  • The fire does not spread to people by bumping into them, but punching or kicking sets them on fire.
  • The effects continue after being Smoked, but not after saving and loading the game.

Saints Row 2[]

Secret Areas[]

In Saints Row 2, there is a Collection Diversion to find 32 Secret Areas, many of which could be considered "Easter Eggs".

Idle[]

There are many hidden Idle animations which Playa can perform in Saints Row 2.

Civilians can perform Idle animations in Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV.

Suicides[]

In Saints Row 2, there are many Action Nodes where Civilians commit suicide by jumping off buildings, and overhanging signs.

Locations
  • Downtown from sign[67]
  • Filmore shoreline[68]
  • University District near bridge

Sky-divers[]

In Saints Row 2, there are several Action Nodes where Civilians with failed parachutes fall from the sky. One of them falls into the open grave in the Mourning Woods Cemetery.

Sea Creature[]

Circling creature

Near the Secret Area known as Super Secret Area, there is a small Sea Creature which swims in a large circle. It is essentially the same as the fish which can be found swimming in many areas and follows a set path. It cannot attack, flee, or be killed.

The texture file for this animal named "creature", and is the only known mention of it in the game data files.

It appears to be similar to the skeleton on Bone Island, and may be the same type of creature.

Mehrman[]

Merhman billboard

Mehrman billboard

Legend has it there's a half-man half-fish that lives down here
— Random civilian comment

There is a billboard to the east of the Hotels & Marina district which says "Beware of the Mehrman", with the notes that he was last seen off the Marina Shore and is "Flippered and Dangerous".

There is a drawing of half-man half-fish, which does not look like the Sea Creature.

Mehrman is a reference to Brian Mehrman, one of the art team.[69]

Shock Paddles[]

When a corpse is lying on the ground, turn away from the corpse and it changes position to lie flat with all limbs spread. Shock the body with the Shock Paddles to launch the corpse into the air.

Graves[]

The names on the graves in Mourning Woods Cemetery are all the names of developers.[69]

Horror house[]

At 11pm until 4am every second night, horror-movie-like noises, voices, and screams can be heard coming from the house at the north end of the Mourning Woods Cemetery.

Saints Row: The Third[]

Penguin nailed

Dead Penguin

Dead Penguin[]

Onboard Nossirah cargo ships, there is a dead penguin nailed to the bulkhead behind the ship's bridge.[70] The penguin bleeds when shot.

In Saints Row: The Third Remastered, the penguin does not bleed.

Missing Ships[]

Easter egg missing ships

On board all Cargo Ships is a list of "Missing Ships", both real and fictional.

Swords[]

Some dock cranes have a sword leaning against the base.[71] This sword is based on Finn's sword in the Adventure Time logo. The filename of the sword's texture is "mathmatikron". In Adventure Time, the word "mathematical" is used as a synonym for "radical".

At least three are located in Salander.[72] One is directly west of Snatch, one is east of the Organ Blackmarket, and another is north of the Organ Blackmarket. The cranes closest to Kinzie's Warehouse do not have swords.

Misc[]

  • In Saints Row: The Third, there are several identical cargo ships called the Nossirah, which is "Harrison" spelled backwards.[Reference needed]
  • All barges have the words "Tinsel Bee" and "Rolyat Leumas" on them. "Tinsel Bee" is a developer in-joke, while "Rolyat Leumas" is Samuel Taylor backwards, referring to Samuel Taylor Coleridge.[73]

Violent noises[]

Several locations in the game have unexplained violent sound effects.

Many of these are still present in Saints Row IV.

Saints Row IV[]

Secret Basement[]

The "Employee's Only" door at Let's Pretend can be shot open, and there is a secret room containing developer heads and the Tiny Pistol weapon.[74] Shooting the developer heads sets off fireworks within the basement.

Misc[]

  • In the 50s Steelport simulation, there is a drive in movie theater featuring films titled "Funset Boulevard", "A Street Car Named Retire", "The Day The Earth Stood Steady", and "Dial M for Mundane". These are references to the 1950s films "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951), "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951), and "Dial M for Murder" (1954), respectively.

In other series[]

  • The Saints Row series features many references to Red Faction, another series created by Volition, Inc., but Volition have confirmed that the Saints Row and Red Faction universes are not linked, and that the Ultor references were only intended as Easter Eggs.[75]
  • The announcement trailer for Agents of Mayhem, another series created by Volition, Inc, contains several references to Saints Row, but Volition have confirmed that while the series are linked, it is a new intellectual property and that the Saints do not exist in that game. Specifically, Agents of Mayhem is set in the new Earth created when Johnny asks God to reset the world in one of the endings of Saints Row: Gat out of Hell.
  • Divekick contains Johnny Gat as a playable character.[76][77]
  • There are Saints Row: The Third promotional items in Team Fortress 2.[78]
