The Saints Wing The Fundamentals

"A Pleasant Day" is the third mission in Saints Row IV.

This perfect life is brought to you by Friendly Fryer.
— Quest description

The mission begins with a 1950s styled title-card for "Leave it to the Saints".[8] Playa eats pancakes[9] and talks to Shaundi,[10] picks up the daily newspaper[3][4] and goes on a ride in a Gunslinger around a 1950s Steelport with the Sheriff.[11][5][6] At Ginger's Dive[12] he begins to notice distortion in the citizens, causing him to swear, that is bleeped[13][14] and begins getting chased by them.[15][16] After Playa kills the Sheriff,[7] Zinyak reveals to Playa that he is in a simulation of Steelport,[17][18][19] which he cannot escape.[20] Zinyak then drops Playa into a new simulation,[21] and warns them that should they try to escape the virtual simulation, Zinyak will destroy Earth.

This mission automatically starts upon completing The Saints Wing. It is not possible to exit this mission, only to restart it.

Go Downstairs to Kitchen[1]
Go Outside[2]
Grab Newspaper[3][4]
Get in Car[5]
Ride Down Main Street[6]
Kill Sheriff[7]

Once the mission begins, walk to the ladder and go to the kitchen, where a quick time event is triggered. Pressing Primary Attack button causes Playa to eat pancakes. Press Action button to drop a fork. Go outside and grab newspaper by pressing Primary Attack button once a QTE begins. Get in a red Gunslinger and drive to Ginger's Dive. It is not possible to drive fast or by another route, so one may simply press Move Forward button as the player arrives to the diner. Collect health refill pickup and enter the marker to participate in photo op. Walk inside to trigger a cutscene, after which gameplay is restored to normal.

Once in a car, drive to the park and fight three waves of cops until an RPG appears which needs to be picked up. Then start causing mayhem (until 100,000 is reached). A super sheriff appears, who must be killed too to finish the mission.

  • It is believed that the song "Dreamin' Schemin'" is a parody of "Mr. Sandman" by the Chordettes.
  • The music that plays during the mission is "Fight! Fight! Fight!"[22] by Will Schaefer, a fanfare tune, which was also featured in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004 as "Now that we're men".
  • Shaundi brings up that someone named Dex had dropped by, but she didn't know who he was so sent him away, referencing that the developers abandoned the Dex storyline due to newer fans not knowing who he was. In-game, Shaundi has never met Dex.
  • The mission plays out as if Playa is stuck in a 1950s sitcom, complete with title card, sponsors, sound track, and accompanying laugh track. They are also bleeped when they utter profanity.
    • 'Leave it to the Saints' is a reference to the 50s TV show Leave It to Beaver.
    • The name of the mission alludes to the movie Pleasantville, where two teenagers are transported to a 1950s sitcom where everything is perfect.
    • Internally, the town is referenced as Pleasantville and Pville, and the hood name is defined as "Pleasanton", but this name does not appear in the game.
  • While in the house and walking towards the Gunslinger, it is impossible to run or move in any other fashion other than prancing. Similarly, when exiting the Gunslinger the player can only walk slowly while waving at people until they get to the next trigger point.
  • The courthouse square is based upon the courthouse square from Back to the Future, in which the film's protagonist travels back in time to the 1950s. In the film, and the game, the clock is stopped at 10:04.[7]
    • The newspaper stands have the "Save the Clock Tower" flyer from the film.[23][24]
  • The town is filled with jokes about normality and conformity. One such joke is an advertisement for a store called "Everybody Loves Me" rather than "Nobody Loves Me".[screenshot?]
  • Even when playing as a female, Shaundi is cooking pancakes and calls Playa "dear".[25]
  • A Professor Genki styled clock is on the wall to the right.[1]
  • The title of the achievement is a reference to The Matrix. In one scene, Neo watches a boy seemingly contort a spoon with his mind, the latter then tells Neo that the secret to the trick is to realize the truth that "there is no spoon".
  • The television screen in the first room features a loop of a black-and-white cartoon Genki skipping through a park.
  • The mission is set on the 12th of May, 1950[26], even though the style of clothing, vehicles, music, etc. are closer to the mid-1950s.
  • One of the Neighbors says "Hi Diddly Hi neighbor" which is similar to a line said by The Simpsons character Ned Flanders.
  • There is no censor bleep if a Taunt with swearing words is chosen during Player Customization.
  • The pitch of Playa's voice also alters the pitch of the censor bleep.
  • Killing an enemy outside the house may cause Playa's 'wife' to reply with the line "Nice one, boss!", which is a line used by Shaundi to compliment Playa in combat, which is the only in-game confirmation that they are the same character.
  • Apart from getting Smoked, there are two ways to fail the mission: Walking away from the Sheriff instead of getting into the Gunslinger, and driving the Gunslinger into the pool, which is the only way to destroy it.
  • The name "Friendly Fryer"[27] is a play on words referring to the weapon store Friendly Fire.
  • The game files refer to the sheriff as Zinyak at all times, before he is revealed to be Zinyak in disguise.
  • Playa's swag walk is refference to WWE Chairman's Mr.Mcmahon walk in the ring during WWE Shows.

  • The first player to reach the stairs is the only one who can slide down them, although the title-cards are displayed for both.
  • The pancake sequence is triggered for both players at the same time, although one can finish before the other and continue to the next objective.
  • Both players must complete the "Get in Car" objective before the mission can continue, but only the host can drive, regardless of which player reached the car first.
  • Only one player can stub their toe: whoever gets there first.
  • During the "Escape" objective, the guest is already in the car, and the host jumps in and drives.
  • When either player picks up the RPG, both players equip it.
  • If a character is loaded which has already unlocked Vehicle Delivery, it is possible to save the randomly spawning police Gunslingers during the "Cause Mayhem" objective.

Playa: "Hi, how are... ?"
The man subtly glitches.
Playa: "What the *BLEEP*?"
Sheriff: "We don't use that kind of language here in Steelport."
All the townspeople inside the diner start advancing towards Playa, slowly and menacingly, while glitching randomly.

Playa - Female 1: "What kind of *beep* are you *beep* trying to pull?"
Playa - Female 2: "Who the *beep* are you and how the *beep* did I get here?"
Playa - Female 3: "Where the *beep* is this *beep*hole?"
Playa - Male 1: "What the *beep* is going on? Where the *beep* am I?"
Playa - Male 2: "Who the *beep* are you people? What the *beep* is this?"
Playa - Male 3: "What the *beep* is this *beep*?"
Nolan North: "What the *beep* is going on? Where the *beep* am I?"
— "Car"
Playa - Female 1: "I wanna get the *beep* away from here."

Playa - Male 2: "Kinzie? Am I hearing things now?"
Playa - Male 3: "Kinzie? Is that really you?"
Nolan North: "Kinzie? Kinzie, where are you?"
Kinzie: "FINALLY!"
Kinzie: "Listen to me. No time to explain. But you have to break free."
Playa - Female 1: "Break free from what, Kinzie?"
Playa - Female 2: "What do you mean, break free?"
Playa - Female 3: "You mind explaining that?"
Playa - Male 1: "Break free? From what?"
Playa - Male 2: "But...I am free."
Playa - Male 3: "What am I meant to break free from?"
Nolan North: "Break free? From what?"
Kinzie: "The place you're in isn't real. Whatever it's having you do, you need to stop."
Playa - Female 1: "What, I'm just driving."
Playa - Female 2: "I am only driving a car."
Playa - Female 3: "Even if I'm only driving a car?"

Nolan North: "Wait, brace for--whoa my God!"
— "Diner Escape"
Kinzie: "I need some more time before I can get you out. It would be really helpful if you could just, y'know, just be you."
Playa - Female 1: "Be me?"
Playa - Female 2: "Be myself?"
Playa - Female 3: "Excuse me?"
Playa - Male 1: "Be me?"
Playa - Male 2: "Be me?"
Playa - Male 3: "Who else would I be?"
Nolan North: "Be... Nolan? Okay."
Kinzie: "This simulation is all about normalcy. Pleasantry. Order. All the things you hate. Go forth. Unleash hell."
— "Unleash"
Keep it up! The simulation is resisting but just keep going.
— Kinzie, "Unleash Encourage"

Kinzie: "You need to do more! Bigger! Hold on, I'm sending you something."
Kinzie: "Find the cat fountain. I left you a present."
Playa picks up the RPG
Playa - Female 1: "Gosh. This is swell."
Playa - Female 2: "Boy, oh boy. This is the bee's knees."
Playa - Female 3: "Gee-willikers. This is dreamy."
Playa - Male 1: "Jeepers. This is peachy."
Playa - Male 2: "Golly. This is keen."
Playa - Male 3: "Boy-howdy. This thing sure is neato."
Nolan North: "Aww, jeepers. This is peachy."
— "Genki Fountain"
Kinzie: "You're doing great. The simulation is--oh no. Wait a minute."
Playa - Female 1: "Wait, wait, wait... What's going on, Kinzie?"
Playa - Female 2: "Wait for what, Kinzie? What is happening?"
Playa - Female 3: "Talk to me, Kinzie!"
Playa - Male 1: "Wait, wait, wait... Wait a what? What's going on?"
Playa - Male 2: "Wait a what? Kinzie, what's going on?"
Playa - Male 3: "What am I waiting for, Kinzie? What's wrong?"
Nolan North: "Wait, wait, wait... Wait a what? What's going on?"
— "Unleash Encourage"

The Sheriff falls from the sky
Sheriff: "Yeeeeeehaaaaaw!"
The Sheriff's voice changes to Zinyak's
Zinyak: "Couldn't leave well enough alone, could ya?"
Zinyak: "You had to push, and push, and push."
Zinyak: "I hope you've enjoyed your last moments."
— "Boss Fight"

Cutscene #2[]

Zinyak: "I'm impressed."
Playa: "Where the hell are-"
Playa: "Fuck me..."
Zinyak: "I should have realized a prison of peace would never hold a sociopath like yourself."
Playa: "I'm more of a puckish rogue."
Zinyak: "A rose by any other name..."
Playa: "Are you trying to kill me, or sleep with me?"
Zinyak: "Charming."
Playa: "There you go with those mix messages again."
Zinyak: "Then allow me to be perfectly clear..."
Zinyak: "I am the architect of your reality. I build what I want..."
Zinyak: "I destroy what I want..."
Zinyak: "And your bravado..."
Zinyak: "Means. Nothing."
Playa shoots at Zinyak with the Quickshot Pistol.
Zinyak: "Fighting back is pointless, my friend."
Zinyak: "There's nowhere to run."
Zinyak: "You belong to me."
Zinyak: "Now onto more pleasant things."
Zinyak: "I'm going to place you in your new home. Try to run again, and I'll destroy your pitiful planet. TTFN."
Wardens appear.
Zinyak: "My friends, each of you are guilty of crimes against the Zin Empire, but today is your lucky day... today you get to be a part of a new work release program..."
Zinyak: "Swear your fealty, and I will empower you to be wardens of simulation 31. You will have one purpose: Torment the President of the United States."
Zinyak: "Beyond that the world is yours to toy with. Ravage it, indulge in your basest desire, it makes no difference to me... just leave the prisoner alive."
Zinyak: "I want them broken, not dead."
Zinyak: "Go now, and tear their world asunder."

Kinzie: "Oh god. Zinyak's locked me out. You have to take him down. I can't get your body if I don't free your mind--"
Kinzie: "I'm going to get you out of there. Just hold on!"
— "Get You Out"
Kinzie: "You'll probably need to defend yourself for a bit. Here's a gun."
Playa - Female 1: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Perfect."
Playa - Female 2: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Excellent."
Playa - Female 3: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Yay."
Playa - Male 1: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Good."
Playa - Male 2: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Good."
Playa - Male 3: "A gun? Oh. A gun. Splendid."
Nolan North: "A gun? Oh, oh! A gun. Good."
— "Give Gun"
